Injured?

Harry's mom here. I'm hijacking his blog to ask for some advice. I think Harry may have hurt his back. The other night he had a failed attempt at jumping on the sofa and since then he won't jump on the sofa (well, he did when I hid one of his treats there during our "find" game), he won't stand on his back legs so I can pick him up to put him in the bed and this morning he wouldn't "dance" for his treats.

At first I thought he was just afraid to "get back on the horse" after his miss at getting on the sofa. I thought maybe it was one of his back legs, but he goes up and down the stairs fine and doesn't favor either of them. The problem with him is that he's so quiet I'm not sure he would cry or make other noises if he was hurt.

So, do I wait it out a few days or do I make an appointment with the vet?

My beloved pug human had the same type of issue and it seemed to resolve itself after a few days. I didn't make an appointment because it seemed to be getting better each day after the injury. I would say to make an appointment if he appears to be in alot of pain and or if it doesn't seem to be getting better in the next two days. Just my thoughts, I am not a vet, just a pug lover.

Ohh Harry I hope he is OK. If he is not favoring anything maybe it is just sore. I would watch him and let him rest before sending him to the vet to be poked and proded. If he does not get better in a few days, then maybe have him checked out. I am not a doctor either - I am just a pug.

Hi! I am sorry this happened. Coco had been limping for the past week and it seems to me that he is not limping anymore but my husband says he still is. Coco walks kind of funny so I am not really sure. What I did was touch his legs and joints to make sure he was not in pain. You could do that very gently and if it hurts or bothers him, then make the vet appointment sooner.

Poor Harry!!

My advice is to give it a little while. In most of the incidents that I have heard about, if a dog has strained or pulled something, vets will just tell you to help them stay off of it for a while. It's difficult to treat.

They could give him some pain meds, but if he doesn't appear to be in much pain, it might save you some money to hold out for a few days and keep an eye on him!

I love my HARRY! Get better!

I would go in right away because the doctor might be able to help more by treating the injury sooner.

Hope you are feeling better soon Harry!

I think Harry is doing his own treatment by not over stressing his back. So he's not jumping or standing up because he knows (in his little doggie way) that it might make it worse. Give him a few days, see if he doesn't get back to his usual self and re-evaluate. Also, what Sandra said - if you can sit him down and sort of massage over parts of his back and see if he reacts to any particular area or if you feel any knots or bumps, it might help give you a clue.
Pugs are very stoic and don't like to show you when they're hurting, so it can be hard to determine if they're really in pain or not.I understand your concern about waiting, but I think you might give him another day or two.

Chloe hurt her back when she was around 2. She was so quiet and quivering and just sad. We took her to emergency vet and she was put on anti-imflammatories (wow, spelling?). Ever since she will NOT jump off anything too high! It seems like she just knows that is caused her trouble. I would say keep a good eye on him and it NEVER hurts to get checked out by vet!

Sorry you hurt yourself buddy! I agree with Rachel & Pearl you should wait a couple of days. I don't cry or nothing if I hurt myself, but since my Daddy is a cheapo we really have to wait everything out. So far home remedies & time has cleared everything up.

We suggest waiting too.... a lot of times these things do sort themselves out and a lot of time there isn't anything the vet can do if he just strained his back. (from our mom: if you can stand it, i suggest waiting a few days, although plenty of times i have gone to the vet because i couldn't stand it)Good luck Harry! We hope you are feeling better soon!!!
